The Start of a New School Year and the Quest for Popularity - online story reading

When Greg Heffley begins his last year of middle school, his mother gives him a journal to write in. This book is the product of his year's recordings, offering insights into his middle school experience. Greg's primary focus throughout the year is to analyze and seek popularity, a goal he consistently chases. Early on, Greg shares a memorable story about an old slice of cheese left on the basketball court. It becomes a symbol of social ostracization — anyone who touches it becomes cursed and shunned by the students.

Greg introduces us to the key figures in his life. His older brother, Rodrick, plays drums in a heavy metal band and enjoys playing pranks on Greg. His younger brother, Manny, is treated like a prince by their parents, much to Greg’s frustration. Greg's best friend, Rowley, is often by his side in various misadventures. Although Greg excels at video games, his father constantly encourages him to spend more time outdoors. Greg faces trouble when he listens to his brother’s music that contains parental warnings, leading to a video-game ban after getting caught.

Greg's school life isn’t much better. When he runs for class treasurer, his attempts to create attention-grabbing posters backfire, and the vice principal throws them in the trash.

Halloween Mischief and Haunted Houses - read novel online

As October arrives, Greg and Rowley get inspired by a local haunted house and decide to build one in Rowley’s basement. However, their haunted house venture ends prematurely when a frightened child crawls under the bed and Rowley’s father catches them, grounding Rowley for a week. Their Halloween adventure doesn't go smoothly either. When trick-or-treating, they are soaked by a group of high schoolers in a truck known as the Whirley Street Kids. In retaliation, Greg and Rowley threaten to call the police, but they end up being chased. They manage to hide at Greg’s Gramma’s house, only to get soaked again by Greg’s dad in the driveway when they return home.

Wrestling, School Plays, and Christmas Disasters - novel format

November brings more challenges for Greg as the physical education teacher introduces a wrestling unit. Greg finds himself paired up with Fregley, another lightweight student, and wishes to move up a weight class. However, his parents want to wait until Christmas to purchase him a bench press. Greg’s mom also pushes him to try out for the school play, "The Wizard of Oz," where he is cast as a tree. Unsurprisingly, the play turns into a disaster.

Christmas proves to be a mixed bag for Greg. While he had hoped for the video game Twisted Wizard, he instead receives a bench press — which he no longer cares about. Adding to the chaos, Greg's mom accidentally gifts him a red sweater intended for a Giving Tree program at church. In the spirit of giving, Greg presents Rowley with a L’il Cutie book he received and disliked, while Rowley gives him a child’s Big Wheel, which results in a humorous turn of events. Teasing Manny on New Year’s Eve gets Greg sent to bed early.

Snowball Fights, Broken Hands, and School Projects

In January, Greg and Rowley create a game involving the Big Wheel, where Greg throws a football at Rowley while he rides downhill. However, the game ends badly when Rowley breaks his hand and starts receiving sympathy and attention at school. Greg, seeking another activity, signs up for Independent Study, which involves building a robot. However, the class is canceled after the boys create an inappropriate list of words the robot should avoid saying.

Meanwhile, Greg and Rowley also join the Safety Patrol, where they help walk kindergarteners home. But in February, when Greg chases the kids with a worm on a stick, Rowley gets blamed for it. Greg struggles with whether to confess, but Rowley eventually tells the truth. Greg gets kicked off the Safety Patrol, and Rowley gets promoted.

Friendships Tested and School Rivalries

March and April prove to be tough months for Greg. Rowley starts spending more time with Collin Lee, effectively ending their friendship. In retaliation, Greg has a disastrous sleepover at Fregley’s house. To make matters worse, Rowley becomes the new cartoonist for the school paper after Greg's comic, “Zoo-Wee Mama,” is taken over by Mr. Ira. Greg’s frustration boils over, and the two nearly fight on the playground, but their confrontation is interrupted by the high schoolers from Halloween. They force Rowley to eat the infamous cheese, breaking the long-standing “cheese curse.”

Year-End Drama and Reconciliation

As May rolls around, Greg’s attempts at pulling pranks on a substitute teacher backfire when his mother embarrassingly shows up at school. To add insult to injury, Rowley is named Class Clown in the yearbook, a title Greg had secretly coveted. Despite the tensions and disagreements throughout the year, Greg and Rowley manage to repair their friendship. The last day of school ends with Greg throwing his yearbook in the trash, acknowledging that middle school, with all its trials and tribulations, hasn’t been what he expected.
